When Animals Go Fucking Nuts!
We discuss Black Sheep and Night of the Lepus
Danny Northside - Monday, October 8, 2007
No matter how ridiculous, how far fetched, and how off the wall, I love animal attack movies. There are soooo many classics. Some simply scare the shit out of you, and some are a great laugh over a few beers with your friends. Each month we plan to dedicate two movies to Mother Nature and her taste for revenge on the human race. The first is a brand new release that is amazing and isn’t getting the hype it deserves. Go figure. It’s an instant cult classic called Black Sheep and it’s hilarious. Imagine Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi getting together to collaborate on a horror movie about sheep turning into blood thirsty monsters. It has their sort of flavor. Henry Oldfield (Nathan Meister) has been away from home for many years, due to his fear of sheep. His family owns a farm and now that his parents have passed, he and his older brother Angus (Peter Feeney) are the sole survivors to inherit the estate. But Henry just wants out; he doesn’t want anything to do with the farm and his brother is going to just pay him off from his share of the estate. What Henry doesn’t know is that Angus has a team of scientists working on genetically altering the sheeps DNA to build a much more efficient animal. Things go wrong when a few environmental activists steal a mutant baby lamb in hopes to shut down the laboratory. They fuck up, release the lamb and when it bites a few sheep a disease is spread throughout the entire flock which turns the sheep into carnivores; devouring every and any human in its path. The disease also travels into a few humans too which turn into this sheep monster that’s transformation is as cool as the werewolf’s in An American Werewolf in London. It’s up to Henry, an old friend and farmhand Tuker (Tammy Davis) and one of the environmental activists whose name is Experience (Danielle Mason) to stop the sheep before they spread this disease outside the farm and destroy all of the living beings throughout New Zealand. Black Sheep has a good share of humor, blood and guts, and a well written script that will guarantee to bring a smile to any fan of The Evil Dead or Dead Alive. Five axes all the way on this one. For the second animal attack movie this month we are stepping back in time to 1972 to talk about another film that should be on a cult classics list for sure: Night of The Lepus. The film stars some pretty big names; Janet Leigh, Rory Calhoun, DeForest Kelley (aka Dr. McCoy of star Trek!), and Stuart Whitman who consistently played a rugged sort of guy and starred in one of the coolest westerns ever made along side John Wayne called The Comancheros. One again, science is to blame for the sudden change in animals behavior! Cole Hillman (Calhoun) owns a ranch in the southwest that is overpopulated by a shit load of rabbits. The rabbits are digging holes and the horses and cattle keep stepping in them breaking their legs. Rather than to hire a bunch of Mexicans to shoot them, he takes the easier route and hires a scientists to genetically alter their blood lines to stop them from mating. Well, as you can probably figure out by now, one of the rabbits is set free (by a stupid kid this time) and takes to the desert mating with as many other rabbits as possible. If people just minded their fucking business, disasters like this would never happen! Now that the infection has spread the rabbits begin to grow into these giant flesh eating bunnies, but the funny thing is they just look like giant rabbits. They don’t mutate into any sort of monsters, they just get humungous and extremely ridiculous. They start eating cattle, people, and horses but still are as adorable looking as ever. Don’t be fooled, the special effects are not amazing by any means, but that’s what makes this entertaining. The film really gets awesome when the military steps in to end the situation with flame throwers and sub machine guns! It’s a drive-in classic, a late night masterpiece, and a movie you’ll never be able to forget. So there you have it, this month’s edition of when Animals Go Fucking Nuts. Below are the trailers for both of these movies. Black Sheep - Chris Farley not included Night of The "who the fuck came up with this" Lepus Next time bring in some old school artillery!
