Who the fuck is that dude?
This month Ted Raimi!
Danny Northside - Sunday, September 9, 2007
This month’s article is dedicated to a fella who deserves much more credibility than he receives. We are talking about Ted Raimi who is the younger brother of Sam Raimi: the man responsible for The Evil Dead, Darkman, and Spiderman to name a few. Though Ted has never really had a leading role in any movie, his face is easily recognizable from all the various parts he has played in countless films and television throughout his career. Theodore Raimi was December 14, 1965 to a working class family in Detroit Michigan. His father was in the furniture business and his mother owned a chain of lingerie shops. Just like his older brothers Ivan and Sam, Ted decided not to follow the family business and went into entertainment. He got his start and the acting bug while messing around as an extra in Sam’s early Super 8 films, often dubbed as a “Fake Shemp.” To my understanding Sam came up with the term as a tribute to the Three Stooges. Shemp had passed away during the filming of a few Stooges episodes and a guy by the name of Joe Palma filled in. They never showed his face; instead filmed him from behind and finished the final four episodes before Joe Besser became the next new Stooge. (The episodes were Rumpus in Harem, Hot Stuff, Scheming Schemers, and Commotion in the Ocean – you can obviously tell it’s not Shemp!) In the credits of Darkman, Bruce Campbell is credited as “Final Shemp.” So everyone got to play a Shemp one time or another!
After his minor role in The Evil Dead, Ted landed two bit parts before returning to The Evil Dead 2 as Possessed Henrietta. His line, “Someone's in my fruit cellar! Someone with a fresh soul,” has become one of the most repeated of the series and is always quoted by some drunk kid at a random party! He continued to act in movies as well as having bit parts on TV shows such as ALF, Alien Nation, Baywatch, CSI NY, Odyssey 5, and Twin Peaks. He also starred as Lt.Timothy O'Neill on SeaQuest DSV. But not long after SeaQuest was cancelled Raimi landed the role of Joxer in Xena: Warrior Princess. He appeared in over forty episodes of Xena and his character also made it into a few episodes of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Last year he starred in Showtime’s Masters of Horror. It was in Tobe Hoopers episode titled The Damned Thing. As for movies, well you have seen his face in a shitload of films. Some roles bigger than others. Just the other night I watched Candyman. It’s been years since I have seen the original, let alone from the beginning. Ted appears in the first few minutes of a story being told to Virginia Madsen. He is chilling drinking a beer when his girl says the word five times that brings Mr. Tony Todd back to fuck shit up. Another role that Ted played was in Wes Craven’s Shocker. He had a small role as Pac-Man and was a friend of the main star Jonathan. Hard Target, a cheesy and random Van Damme flick has a quick appearance with Ted. Other quick cameo’s and roles include Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence, the original Wishmaster, The Grudge, Clear and Present Danger, three totally unrelated and different characters in Army of Darkness, Troma’s Tales from the Crapper, all three Spiderman flicks, Patriot Games, Rick a gangster in Darkman, and in one of my recent favorites: The Man with the Screaming Brain. You can bet you will be seeing more of Ted Raimi in the near future. A long time friend of Bruce Campbell (Bruce used to baby sit Ted!) he plays a character named Wing in the highly anticipated movie this fall called My Name is Bruce. The plot is about how Bruce Campbell, who is living his normal life, gets kidnapped by some kids who come to him for help thinking he is Ash from the Evil Dead. He gets dragged from his trailer park home to battle a Chinese war demon named Guan Di. Ted is rumored to play three different Shemps! Another up coming film to keep an eye out for is called Planet Raptor: Raptor Island 2 But the title for that one says it all; you don’t need me going over the plot there! So we salute you Ted, for always kicking ass and for keeping it real. (See video below!) We suggest you folks keep an eye out for movies or television shows that Ted has a role in. It’s guaranteed to be entertaining. Now you know, and the next time you see him in a movie tell your friends, “I know all about that guy!” Here is a hilarious excerpt from Xena Season 4 bonus feature DVD. Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi tell it like it is! YO! Your filming this movie in Bulgaria????
