I have always been more of a super natural horror fan when it comes to books. I guess it’s the whole religious aspect that scares me more than anything. It’s one of the perks from having a Catholic background. But I do enjoy my share of zombie books and films. I would love to shoot the dead; I would have no problem being a sniper!

Well, I just got done reading Rise and Walk which is a zombie thriller and I got to admit, I loved it. When I received a copy in the mail from author Gregory Solis, I had a lot on my plate with starting up this site. It took me a little time to get started reading it. It’s one of those books that once I started I was completely glued. It’s a pretty hip story line: A paint ball war in the middle of nowhere gets infested with people that suddenly have a taste for flesh. (After they died of course!) With no connection to the outside world due to getting stuck in a remote location in the middle of nowhere, everyone out there is basically fucked. All hell breaks loose in the mountains and help is NOT on the way. As chaos erupts on their camp, two thrill seekers with a bit of survivor skills under their belt, along with two sweet babes use their knowledge to try to stay alive. Unfamiliar with the territory, limited supplies, and almost famished they have to fight their way through hordes of flesh eating zombies as they try to make their way back down to civilization.

There are a few things I’d like to point out about this book and Solis’ writing that I really dug. For one he is very good at throwing you off the trail in regards to what you may think is going to happen. In some chapters he builds up characters that you think will become a main staple throughout the book, only to have them torn to shreds in the next. Others you think may die right away live for a while and it just simply keeps you guessing. There are a few really cool twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat giving the book a bit more flavor than your average zombie book.

I also feel that he does a great job with describing locations, people’s appearances and personas, etc. It is very easy to visualize the situations and characters involved as well as the backdrop. By the time I got done reading this book I swear I felt like I have been to this little town, went hunting up there, knew the people that were rising from the dead; better yet it was like I lived there.

The end includes a really cool twist and it will continue in the second edition to the story, Rise and Walk: Pathogen. Solis has plans on turning this into a trilogy and he already has the second part of the story in the works. Let me add – this is all done DIY by Solis himself. That alone impressed the shit out of me because the layout of the book and everything else involved is as professional as it comes. Honestly, I would never have known if he didn’t tell me!

I really liked Rise and Walk and I am anticipating reading the second. Generally the first part of any story tends to lay the concrete for the second and then third. Well if this is what you call laying the concrete, I can‘t fucking wait to read the second story cause it’s that good. I highly recommend you get after this book. Gregory Solis has a winner on his hands here, no doubt!

If you’re interested in a sample of the book, you can download the first 48 pages from his website @ www.hadrianpublishing.com It will give you a little taste of the book’s style.
