Video Interview w/ Jerry Only of the Misfits

The nicest guy that could tear a head off of that you could ever meet!

This past November my band North Side Kings got the opportunity to play with The Misfits. All things aside I think The Misfits were and still are an amazing band. The current line up with Dez Cadena and Robo of Black Flag was a site to see and they crushed all attended rocking Misfits and Black Flag tunes.

But the most impressive was Jerry Only. When I pulled up in the back of the venue Jerry was outside talking on the telephone. While on the phone he walked up and introduced himself. Not seeing him in his costume I sort of backed up a bit. The guy is a big fella….even more so in person. When he got off the phone we got to talking. He was extremely nice to everyone at the venue. We talked a bit about their tour and about music in general. His son was also there and was a real cool cat too. I mentioned to him that I wanted to do an interview with him for my website and he was into it.

The interview turned into basically two guys bullshitting. I had some of our traditional Quiz of The Dead questions ready to go but we really just had more of an interesting conversation in general. We talked about him working with George Romero, Famous Monsters of Filmland, Basil Gogos, and even The New York Jets. It was a lot of fun and to be honest, it could have gone on for hours.

What really blew meout of the water is how Jerry treated his fans. In all my years of going to concerts and playing music I have never seen a person so courteous and grateful. Before The Misfits went on he was talking to kids around the venue and when they finished he did the same. Mind you, they played for almost an hour and a half. He stayed and signed autographs, took pictures, and talked to every kid that was interested until the last one left the building.

I may play in a band but the feeling of being hyped up to meet someone whose art you’re into will never change for me. Jerry Only was a breathe of fresh air in an industry that is filled with folks who let if get to their heads. He is a regular guy and within five minutes of bullshitting with him he wanted to give everyone the shirt off his back. And a slice of peach pie he had in the dressing room for that matter!
