Note: This was an interview I did with Tura Satana in Feb 2008. She passed away at age 72 in Reno on February 4th. We had the honor to chat back and forth a bit and she was very down to Earth. So in tribute to her for her passing I re posted this interview. RIP.
Tura Satana is an American Icon. To have the opportunity to interview her is a huge privilege to me and an honor. I first discovered her when I was in high school; I remember seeing a poster for Russ Meyer’s Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! as a prize at a Flemington Fair in NJ and thought Satana was the hottest women I had ever seen. I threw the darts like a champ and came home with one of those cheesy framed posters. I really had no idea who the super hot woman was but I was a teenager and I had a trophy!
I finally saw Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and a horror film she did called The Astro-Zombies when I was out of high school. Needless to say I was blown away about Tura’s portrayal of a powerful women in a time when you didn’t see very much of that. I still think Tura Satana is one of the sexiest women of all time and being called one of the Ten Best Undressed Women of All Time is proof enough! My favorite role Tura has played is Lavella Sumara in The Doll Squad released in the early seventies. You can tell Charlie’s Angels totally ripped this movie off it’s so obvious no one can disagree.
In recent years Tura has made festival appearances and has just about finished writing her own biography called The Kick Ass Life of Tura Satana. Also comic book artist Mike Hoffman has created a tribute to Tura in a new comic book series titled Tura Satana – The Ultimate Femme Fatale. She appeared in Ted Mikeles’s sequel Mark of The Astro-Zombies and will most likely also appear in the third. Her latest film that was completed in December is called Sugar Boxx and has legendary exploitation director Jack Hill and Tura playing judges. ICSYB - If you woke up tomorrow to find that the dead had risen, where would you hold out and defend yourself from the zombie horde?
Satana - The closest cemetery, because they have all left it. I would probably defend myself in an open crypt. If not, I would pretend to be a zombie or vampire myself and see if I could scare the shit out of them?
ICSYB - If you were to play another part in a spooky movie like Astro-Zombies, would you want to play the role of the villain or as the victim?
Satana - Oh come now, ME? A Victim??? Lots of luck. I will always play the heavy here, just so I can kick ass.
ICSYB – I figured that, I still had to ask : ) But lets say you had to get killed by a horror villain, who would you chose and how would you go?
Satana - Well, if I HAD TO GET KILLED, I think that I would prefer Dracula, this way I can rise again and wreak more havoc on the populace.
ICSYB - If you could pick any celebrity you would like to see get slaughtered beyond recognition in a horror flick who would you choose and why?
Satana - Well, I am torn between Jane Fonda and Hillary Clinton. Jane Fonda for Hanoi and Hillary Clinton for just on general principles for the thief that she and her husband are.
ICSYB - The Munsters or the Adam’s Family….. Which one was better?
Satana - I liked the Munsters myself because of Yvonne, but the Addams Family were also great. I think that I would have made a very good Morticia.
ICSYB - What film would you say is one of the scariest of all time?
Satana - I would have to say Texas Chainsaw Massacre, because it is so feasible. But I also liked Christine!
ICSYB - Who’s your favorite of the Classic Horror Monsters?
Satana - I would have to say that the Wolfman was always my favorite, but then I liked all of the Dracula's and Boris Karloff as the Frankenstein Monster. Of course he was also great as the Mummy. The older horror films always gave the audience a chance to use their imagination.
ICSYB – I totally agree! Have you seen any new horror or sci-fi films lately that you really dug?
Satana - No really, I don't really care for any of the newer horror films. As for Sci Fi films I did like Alien series and all of the Star Trek films and the Star Wars films.
ICSYB – Frankenberry or Count Chocula?
Satana - I like the Franenberry.
ICSYB- Do you think the Doll Squad could have killed the crap out of Charlie’s Angeles?
Satana - Honey, The Doll Squad could have kicked the ass out of any of the Charlies Angel's. We didn't need any special effects to accomplish of feats. I am very handy with dynamite and explosives. Would you like a demonstration?
ICSYB – Hahaha You are amazing! What was one of your scariest bad dreams?
Satana - I had a dream about a loose gorilla once and that did make me a little scared, but then it was when I was in Manzanar Relocation Camp.
ICSYB – Oh man, I hate loose gorillas! Say you became a creature of the night and could pick anyone you'd want to eat alive, who would you choose?
Satana - If it was someone from the past then I would say Rod Taylor, if it was someone from the present, it would be Mel Gibson and if it is someone in the future, I would say that I would take George Clooney. I think that covers all the hunks that I would chew on.
