Gorefest - Rise to Ruin
Rise and shine!

Released: 2007 Website: Gorfest Official Site Buy this music at Amazon I love Gorefest. Despite their cheesy name, despite their "Death and Roll" period, despite them getting back together after a 7 year breakup (those usually end up pretty bad [see Celtic Frost's Monotheist]). Holland's Gorefest began in the early 90's with their decent effort "Mindloss" and then came out with one of the most monumental death metal records of all time "False". One of the most crushing records of all time. They then released a live set from the Eindhoven Festival entitled "The Eindhoven Insanity" and the drums on it are definitely insane (as well as it's price on ebay). They then slid a little downhill and went on Entombed's left hand path (hee hee) and started playing classic rock influenced death and roll. Those records are all great, but don't even come close to touching False. They then broke up in the late 90's and most of the members continued in their Thin Lizzy cover band Live and Dangerous.
Enter 2004. Rumors abound of Gorefest being a band again, and 2005's "La Muerte" is released. And to my surprise, it's a Death Metal record! And a damn good one! They then have quickly written and recorded "Rise To Ruin" since as well as some European touring and festival dates. It's a great record and heavy as hell. I was recently listening to it with a friend and he said "this band almost sounds like a machine. So heavy and tight." And that's exactly what they are. A Death Metal machine. Heavy, chugging, machine like guitars and they've even gone back to doing a good amount of blast beats which are some of the most perfect I've heard. My only complaint about Gorefest version 2 is that JC has still stuck with his lackluster Death and Roll style vocals rather than his manic glass gurgling vocals from the early days. But this is a solid, solid release and blows away any of the bullshit death metal and metalcore coming out these days.
Real deal death metal - the kind your mom hates!
